Watch Amazon’s ‘Cinderella’ First Look Trailer
Amazon shared the first look trailer for its upcoming live-action remake of Cinderella. The updated version of the classic tale stars pop singer and former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello as the titular princess, and Broadway powerhouse Idina Menzel as her evil stepmother.
Amazon acquired the rights to the film from Sony earlier this year, changing its theatrical release to a digital one. Kay Canon (Blockers, perfect pitch) wrote and directed the film, which hits Amazon Prime Video in September. While the Cinderella story has been told time and time again – most famously by Disney – Cannon’s version puts the story of wealth in a different twist.

Once upon a time, in 2015, Disney released its own live-action Cinderella. The Kenneth Branagh-directed film was a beautiful fairytale retelling, preserving the old-fashioned aspects of the 1950 animated classic. Lily James played Ella with grace and charm, while Cate Blanchett evoked old Hollywood glamor with her portrait of his mother-in-law. Since then, Disney has produced live-action remakes of their greatest hits, with varying degrees of success.
Meanwhile, Amazon Cinderella seems to have more in common with Disney Nice to meet you than it does with its source material. From what the trailer looks like, the musical style is distinctly pop, and while the setting is traditional, the dialogue is quite modern. Cabello’s young heroine is more insolent than Cinderella’s past, and it seems she has higher ambitions than falling in love with a prince.
Cabello and Menzel are joined by LAYING starring Billy Porter as the Fairy Godmother, as well as Pierce Brosnan, John Mulaney, Minnie Driver, James Corden and Missy Elliot appearing in currently undisclosed roles. Yeah, it’s gonna be interesting.
Cinderella premieres on Amazon Prime Video starting September 3.
