SL receives 4 million doses of Sinopharm vaccines
Colombo, September 19 (IANS): Sri Lankan authorities have received 4 million doses of Chinese Sinopharm vaccines as a mass vaccination program against Covid-19 is currently underway in the island nation.
The vaccines arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo on two Sri Lankan Airlines flights from Beijing, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Officials said the shipment was transported to the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) main warehouse complex by vehicles equipped with freezers.
The Chinese Embassy in Colombo said the latest shipment was the last batch of the contract signed by the Sri Lanka SPC.
To date, Sri Lanka has received a total of 26 million Sinopharm vaccines, which has supported over 80% of the country’s vaccination campaign.
Official statistics showed that the Sinopharm vaccine was the main vaccine used nationwide with 10,886,678 doses given as the first dose until Friday and 8,973,670 given as the second dose.
The other vaccines administered are AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna and Sputnik V.
Earlier this month, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa called on authorities to finish vaccinating people over 30 by this month.
The country has so far detected 500,772 cases of Covid-19 since March last year and 11,938 deaths.
