Silver Moon is currently on a series of cruises around the Greek Islands from the port of Piraeus

Silversea Cruises officially named its new ship Silver Moon during a ceremony in the port of Piraeus, Greece.

The event brought together guests including Richard Fain, chairman of Silversea’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group, as well as Roberto Martinolu, chairman and CEO of Silversea Cruises; Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of the merchant ships division of Fincantieri; and Harry Theoharis, Minister of Tourism of Greece.

“Attending the official nomination of Silver Moon – the first of Silversea’s christenings as part of the Royal Caribbean Group – was a moment of great pride,” said Fain. “I congratulate the Silversea management team, Captain Georgiev and the Silver Moon crew, the Fincantieri team and everyone involved in launching the ship for their tireless efforts to bring this much anticipated milestone to a successful conclusion. “

Reverend Father Ioannis Patsis, vice president of the Caritas Hellas charity, delivered the traditional blessing for the ship. The ship’s godmother, winegrower Gaia Gaja, then broke the traditional bottle of champagne on her bow. Guests watched the event on screens throughout the ship, while viewers were able to watch the broadcast via an online stream.

“It has been an honor to cut the ribbon and signal the formal appointment of Silver Moon as the ship’s godmother,” said Gaja. “Silver Moon embodies the core values that my family’s winery shares with this cruise line: a respect for tradition, a commitment to unwavering quality and a deep respect for cultural values.

Silver Moon is the cruise line’s second Muse-class ship, with a capacity of 596 passengers. The ship will feature redesigned public spaces and offer butler service in all suite categories, with a crew-to-guest ratio of nearly 1: 1.

Silversea’s new culinary program, Sea and Land Taste or SALT, also debuted aboard the ship, with three new on-board culinary venues now available to guests. The SALT Kitchen, SALT Lab and SALT Bar will feature dishes, drinks and demonstrations inspired by the regions the ship sails in, and SALT Shore Excursions will allow passengers to experience the food and drink of each destination.

“This is an extraordinary step in the history of our cruise line,” said Martinoli. “On board the newest addition to our fleet, our guests will rediscover the world in unparalleled comfort and whispered luxury. I express my gratitude to the Royal Caribbean Group, Fincantieri, Captain Georgiev and the ship’s crew, as well as our teams ashore, for making this momentous occasion possible.

Silver Moon is also one of six Silversea ships, alongside Silver Muse, Silver Origin, Silver Shadow, Silver Whisper and Silver Explorer, to have received the Marine Industry Infection Control Certification (CIP-M) from the classification society DNV. The certificate verifies that a company maintains a detailed operational plan for the prevention, control and mitigation of infections.

The ship will continue to operate a series of round-trip cruises around the Greek islands from the port of Piraeus, before setting off on a seven-day cruise to Venice, Italy on September 23.
