Gunmen abduct eight passengers from boat in Bayelsa
Gunmen attacked a speedboat carrying 15 passengers and abducted eight of them in Bayelsa state.
It was recorded that a rescue team made up of marine police, community leaders and concerned people rescued seven of the 15 passengers who were abandoned by the gunmen.
The passengers are believed to have left Egwe-ama in the Brass local government area of the state where they attended a funeral over the weekend.
The suspected pirates reportedly intercepted their 200hp motorboat near a rice paddy and fled with eight of the passengers to an unknown destination.
The President of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Brass LGA Branch, Daniel Biodoumoye has confirmed the attack on the passenger speedboat bound for Yenagoa.
Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Asinim Butswat confirmed the abduction but said seven people were abducted.
“The passenger boat was attacked on Monday June 13, 2022 and seven passengers were reportedly abducted. We have opened an investigation into the incident,” he said.
