Ahead of the next holiday season, e-commerce marketplace Flipkart has strengthened its supply chain network in Karnataka with the addition of three new facilities.

According to a statement, the new distribution centers will help build deeper capacity to help thousands of vendors, MSMEs and smallholder farmers across the state meet growing customer demand and create more job opportunities while enabling faster deliveries for consumers.

The facilities are located in Hubli in northern Karnataka, in Kolar and in Anekal near Bengaluru. “These new facilities will serve sellers of major appliances, furniture, cell phones, clothing and electronics,” said Filipkart.

“Distribution centers are specialized facilities where products are received from vendors across the region, processed and packaged, and then sent to sorting and delivery centers for delivery to customers. Collectively spread over nearly 7 lakh square feet, the facilities have a storage capacity of 15.6 lakh cubic feet helping more than 10,500 vendors. The expansion will further contribute to the state’s economy and create 14,000 additional direct and indirect job opportunities, as vendors will have access to the domestic market for their products, ”said Flipkart.

The facilities were inaugurated in a virtual session by the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Member of Parliament from Lok Sabha from Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka Pralhad Joshi. He was joined on Thursday by Murugesh Nirani, Minister of Large and Medium Industries in the government of Karnataka, Mangal Suresh Angadi, MP for Belagavi and other state bureaucrats.

Joshi said, “Karnataka, as India’s Silicon Valley, has been home to some of the country’s most successful start-ups with its supportive policies, cutting-edge infrastructure and wide availability of talent. It is a great pride that Flipkart, a state-owned start-up, has become a pan-Indian organization and is making significant investments in its home state to accelerate the creation of value for all. The expansion of supply chain infrastructure in the state including northern Karnataka will boost economic activities and create large scale entrepreneurship and employment opportunities in the state and we are ensuring Flipkart of the government’s full support in its efforts.

Flipkart has nine supply chain facilities, including processing and sorting centers in Karnataka, spread over nearly 23 lakh square feet, creating over 26,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Commenting on the launch of the new facilities, Rajneesh Kumar, Director of Corporate Affairs at Flipkart Group, said: “As a committed corporate citizen, our effort is to create value for all of our stakeholders by on-boarding thousands of millions of MSMEs and small vendors to serve millions of consumers across the country. In this journey, we have invested in a technology supply chain network that helps create thousands of direct employment opportunities across the country and also assists indirect employment opportunities in ancillary industries. The new state-of-the-art facilities will help fuel economic growth and set a benchmark in the industry and make Karnataka even more attractive for e-commerce operations for all stakeholders including vendors, MSME, small farmers, Kiranas and artisans. “
