Engine fire aboard British Columbia training vessel off Vancouver Island; students, safe crew
Ship taking students and staff from the Gulf Islands to Salt Spring Island High School
Pupils and crew aboard a marine school bus have been rescued to safety after an engine fire on the ship used to ferry children to school in British Columbia’s southern Gulf Islands.
A spokesperson for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Center in Victoria said crew members aboard the ship were able to extinguish the fire on Thursday morning.
The ship was transporting students and staff from the surrounding Gulf Islands to Salt Spring Island High School.
The rescue center spokesman said there were 33 people on board and all passengers except one crew member were safely transferred to another vessel.
The ship has since been towed to nearby Sidney for repairs.
The Rescue Coordination Center says several vessels in the area responded to the incident, including a fast-response lifeboat launched by BC Ferries’ Coastal Renaissance, but called off before reaching places.
