Cruise ship forced to turn back in UK due to Covid-19 cases

Only one cruise ship over 50 years old traveling from the UK to the Caribbean has been forced to turn back in the Atlantic Ocean due to positive Covid-19 cases on board.

The Spirit of Adventure left England on February 22 but has now been forced to turn back due to strict Covid-19 entry rules at the Caribbean destination.

The trip had been dubbed “A Caribbean Spring” and was to take 35 days to visit the Azores, Antigua, Anguilla, Tortola, Port Royal, Grand Turk, Bermuda and then return to the UK via another stay in the Azores.

However, the number of positive cases on board means they have only reached the first port of call in the Portuguese-held islands.

The Spirit of Adventure can carry almost 1,000 passengers, with more than 500 crew members also on board.

She is described on the Saga Cruises website as a “luxury cruise experience” and a “boutique ship”.

The website explains: “Aboard this ship, service levels are second to none, with a 2:1 guest-to-crew ratio, so there is always someone on hand.

“And with all gratuities included in the price, every customer receives the same high levels of service.”

The ship’s first sailing was postponed due to Covid-19 and finally took place in 2021.

A Saga spokesperson told LADbible: “Unfortunately, we were unable to continue our current Caribbean cruise.

“While the limited number of guests with Covid are asymptomatic or only showing very mild symptoms, the strict entry requirements into the Caribbean have meant that we have made the difficult decision to return to the UK.

“All guests receive a full refund.

“We would like to thank all of our guests, who were very understanding of the decision we made and appreciated the service levels we maintained, thanks to the hard work of our team.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our number one priority and we value the long-term relationship we have with them.

“We, like everyone in the cruise industry, are learning to live with Covid and look forward to welcoming our guests back on another cruise in the near future.”
